The Meta description tag is a fragment of html code. It is a part of the head section of the webpage. Generally it is placed after the title tag and before the Meta keywords tag. However, it is not important to maintain the same order. Meta description gives a brief description of a page or the website. Almost all of the major search engines such as Yahoo, Google, MSN, Bing etc use the Meta description tag. When the website is listed on the result page the website owner has a direct input on the way people look at the site. Since it is under one’s control, one can influence the click behavior of the visitor.
The tag description has to be placed in the sections of the site, therefore one should avoid using characters such as: !, %, @, $, # or any other. One can use the given syntax for the html tag: <META NAME=”Description” CONTENT=” one’s descriptive sentences are written here.”> A description should not be more than 300 characters. Generally the search engines display 152-154 characters on the page along with the result. More than 152 characters are ignored by Google. Yahoo displays 225 characters and Bing displays the maximum characters that are 300.
It is important to know that how the search engine uses these tags. The search engine reads the website’s description tag, matches the keywords and the website content. It is advised that one should use keywords in the title tag and also in the Meta description tag. Besides this the title tag is very important for the search engine. The text used in the title tag is one of the most important factors for ranking one’s site on the search engine’s rank list. One should also make a note that all the major crawlers or the robots use one’s title tag as the readable text for listing one’s site on the page. It is valuable to note that Meta description tag for the page can control various crawlers to some extent. A simpler way to do so is to take first few sentences of the content and use them for Meta description.
